Character Entropy: Calculating Strength in Random Letter Sequences

Understand bits of entropy, dictionary attacks, and why length beats complexity in passwords.

Character Entropy: Calculating Strength in Random Letter Sequences

Entropy is the measure of unpredictability in a security key or password.

Entropy Calculation

For an alphabet of size N = 26 (lowercase letters only), each character contributes approximately 4.7 bits of entropy.

When both uppercase and lowercase letters are allowed (N = 52), each character provides approximately 5.7 bits of entropy.

A 16-character random letter string provides over 91 bits of entropy, making brute-force attacks computationally impossible with current hardware.
